Mauro Colantonio

Mauro Colantonio is an Italian viol player and wind instrumentalist currently based in Vienna. His artistic work is driven by a fascination with unconventional sound worlds, ranging from Renaissance and Baroque repertoire to traditional music, with a particular emphasis on improvisation and the expressive power of musical and theatrical gesture.
He studied at the Civic School of Music “C. Abbado” in Milan, the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, and the Mozarteum University Salzburg. He has developed a versatile career as a soloist, continuo player, conductor, and arranger.
Colantonio performs in some of the world’s most prestigious venues, from the Berlin Philharmonie to Teatro alla Scala in Milan, and collaborates regularly with leading early music ensembles, including Il Giardino Armonico (Giovanni Antonini), Cappella Mediterranea (Leonardo García Alarcón), L’Arpeggiata (Christina Pluhar), Cantar Lontano (Marco Mencoboni), Il Suonar Parlante (Vittorio Ghielmi), La Fonte Musica (Michele Pasotti), La Divina Armonia (Lorenzo Ghielmi), and Cappella Claudiana (Luca Pianca), among many others.
Among his recent recording projects are a Decca recording of Emilio de’ Cavalieri’s Rappresentatione di Anima et di Corpo with Il Giardino Armonico, a recording of sacred motets by Barbara Strozzi with Florida Cappella, and a project dedicated to the music of Stefano Landi with Marco Mencoboni.
He is a member of the Croatian Baroque Ensemble and is frequently involved in the conception and direction of innovative and highly distinctive artistic projects, appearing as both artistic director and viola da gamba soloist. “Rosso Veneziano” is his latest project for the 2026 season.
