Lucija Varšić
Lucija Varšić is a Croatian mezzo-soprano who grew up in an artistic family. Her passion for early music has established her as a highly sought-after Baroque singer, collaborating with renowned ensembles such as Concentus Musicus Wien, Bach Collegium Zürich, and the Academy of Ancient Music.
She graduated in Vocal Performance and Historical Performance Practice from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien), where she appeared in numerous operatic productions, including the roles of Dorabella, Dido, and Hänsel.
As a freelance artist, Varšić has developed an international career, performing throughout Austria, Germany, Switzerland, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom. She has also achieved notable success in numerous national and international competitions. In 2026, she was awarded First Prize and the Audience Prize at the International Handel Singing Competition in London. In 2024, she won both First Prize and the Audience Prize at the International Baroque Singing Competition in Froville, France, and received three awards at the prestigious Cesti International Singing Competition in Innsbruck.
She has appeared at leading festivals including the London Handel Festival, Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik, the International Harnoncourt Festival, and the International Baroque Days Melk, and has performed in major concert venues such as the Wiener Musikverein, Musikverein Graz, and the Wiener Konzerthaus.
Recent operatic engagements include the roles of Humilità and Nobilità in Alessandro Stradella’s Santa Editta at the Sacred Music Festival in Nice, and Andronico in Vivaldi’s Il Giustino at the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music. At the Theater Bregenz, she appeared as Anna Kennedy in Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda. With Teatro Barocco, she performed Marc’Antonio in Hasse’s Marc’Antonio e Cleopatra and Asteria in Gluck’s La Corona.
As a concert singer, Varšić is equally active in both the Lied and oratorio repertoire. Bach’s oratorios, Passions, and numerous cantatas, together with Mozart’s masses, form a central part of her repertoire, which she has performed extensively in Austria, Germany, France, and Switzerland.
In January 2026, she appeared as Oreste in Giuseppe Abos’s Baroque opera Pelopida at the Valletta Baroque Festival in Malta. In March, she performed the role of Dalinda in Handel’s Titus L’Empereur at the London Handel Festival, and in May she appeared as Ramiro in Mozart’s La finta giardiniera at the Stadttheater Gießen in Germany.
Upcoming engagements include the role of Cupid in John Blow’s Venus and Adonis, to be performed at the Korčula Baroque Festival and at the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb in September 2026.
